DESIGN GOAL

Make people familar to reading, increase readings and eventually give them interesting feeling in their reading through TBTB.

TBTB provides short readings that users can read during their spare time without any burden. By your reading habbit, bud-dy, your little and special plant changes its appearance. It makes users read effeciently with no extra need to make time for reading, increasing their reading amount and giving interest in their reading as well.

Star Lee, 23y, 1 hour commuting

 

She do nothing but only look at the smartphone during her commuting hours. From messanger to sns, she does everyting and there’s almost nothing to do more, but she keeps watching it. She always willing to read some books but she never does. Her efforts to read a book often end up just picking it because there's no reward for her reading.

SECONDARY PERSONA

 

Gina Kim, 22y, 1hour commuting

 

She is so-called an avid reader. Her hobby is reading. She brings her book in her commuting hours but often feels it's too heavy to hold up. She sometimes pays and gets an e-book , but the contents often don't fit her taste. She wants to buy an e-book after foretaste it a bit. Also, she wants to find a book that right fits to her taste than just reading any book.

TBTB is consist of 3 parts: home, library and settings.

 

1. Home

This page is the main part of TBTB. It shows your reading status by visually showing Bud-dy's appearance. You can set your Bud-dy's name and it will be displayed on the top of the page. There are 6 steps in Bud-dy's growth: seed, sprout, baby tree, adolesce tree, adult tree, and apple. When you finally reach to the apple stage, you will get an apple as a reward and with this, you are able to buy an e-book. Apple is a coin in TBTB.

 

2. Library

Here you can read short readings. Each box shows name of the book, date and its category. Once you read it, the color of box turns into green. You can find your past readings just by scrolling down the page. You can get new readings by click the 'new one' button in the bottom.

 

3. Settings

If you are a first user of TBTB, you should fill the profile; your name, profile photo and Bud-dy's name. It is not mendatory system, so if you submit blank profile, there goes default profile; the screenshot shows default profile. Also, you can select cateogries before you start reading. There's no limit in your selecting and if you are hesitate to select, you can just randomly get the readings. You can change your profile and categories at anytime with just clicking 'change' button below.

Purpose

Does Bud-dy really affect users' reading? The purpose of the experiment is to proove Bud-dy's effectiveness.

 

1. Provides pdf file type reading through Kakaotalk messenger.

Since Kakaotalk is really common messenger application that almost everyone has, it can give the natural feeling and by doing so, there's no need to download another messenger application.

 

2. Experiment goes just on weekdays not on saturday and sunday: 5-day experiment

Generally a person shows different pattern between weekday and weekend. Also, the purpose of the TBTB is to make people read in their spare time so weekday experiment is better to check spare time reading pattern.

 

3. Between group test: Bud-dy group & Non-Bud-dy group

Average amount of reading: Count the number of provided pdf file

Consistency: Check the days of reading during 5days

Satisfaction: Get the average score by using 7 scale Use questionnaire

EXPERIMENT PLAN

Total 10 participants, they were divided into 2 groups 5 participants each: Bud-dy group and Non-Bud-dy group. Selected 10 participants' commuting hour was about an hour or more. Also they were all friends so they got no burdden in reading.

PROTOTYPE SCENARIO

1. Between group

After gathering 10 participants, divide into 2 groups of 5 members each; Bud-dy and Non-Bud-dy groups.

Bud-dy should be explained in detail only to Bud-dy group before experiment starts. Bud-dy members also should give their own Bud-dy's name. If not, their Bud-dy's name will be shown as default name "Bud-dy".

 

RESULT

2. Pre-survey & explanation

Average commuting hour, usual behaviour at that time, average amount of reading in a month, and selecting reading categories to get during the experiment were asked in the pre-survey. Also, before the experiment starts, enough explanation about TBTB was provided.

3. Experiment

Provide short readings (amount of 300 to 400 words) to participants when they want it. Bud-dy team will get current Bud-dy's status as well. When participants finish their reading, they should reply message noticing that they finished. They will get a new reading when they replied.

4. Bud-dy's status

Only for the Bud-dy group, Bud-dy's status will be shown like the application screenshot as above 'home' part image. When they want to see their Bud-dy's current status, just simply message "Bud-dy's name or Bud-dy" and they will get Bud-dy's status.

5. Post-survey & Interview

After 5-day experiment, all the participants will do the survey. Also their amount of reading, consistency and satisfaction level will be checked. Survey was consist of modified USE questionnaires; Useful, Satisfaction and Easy of use questionnaire.

Bud-dy group did 2 survey; TBTB USE questionnaire and Bud-dy USE questionnaire with some additional questions and Non-Bud-dy group only did TBTB USE questionnaire. Also, 2 participants from Bud-dy group were interviewed.
